Evaluating Safety Programs at Rick Aviation, Newport News, VA

Introduction

Effective safety programs are essential in aviation, regardless of whether an organization operates a major airline, a maintenance facility, or a fixed-base operator (FBO). This week’s focus is on identifying the organization I will assess for my upcoming safety evaluation project. I will also highlight the benefits any organization, especially an aviation service provider, can gain from a thorough safety program assessment.

Organization I Will Assess: Rick Aviation

For my final research paper, I will assess Rick Aviation, a full-service fixed-base operator located at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF) in Newport News, Virginia. As a long-standing provider of aviation services, Rick Aviation presents an ideal case for examining how smaller aviation organizations manage operational risk, employee safety, and regulatory compliance.

Overview of Rick Aviation

Rick Aviation has been operating at PHF for decades and is known for offering a wide range of general aviation services. As a locally operated FBO, the company provides:

  • Aircraft fueling (Jet-A and Avgas)

  • Maintenance and repair services

  • Hangar and tie-down facilities

  • Aircraft rental

  • Flight training

The organization serves private pilots, corporate jet operators, flight students, and transient aircraft. With services spanning from fueling to aircraft maintenance, Rick Aviation must manage a diverse set of operational hazards, including ramp operations, fuel handling, environmental risks, aircraft movement, and maintenance-related safety concerns.
